Visiting the historical center of Naples means exploring history twenty centuries. The arrangement of the streets as well as the places, the churches, the monuments, the public buildings and the castles represent a treasure of unique artistic and historical masterpieces, so that UNESCO already included the old town in the World Heritage List in 1995.
The center of Naples extends on an area of over 1000 ha and is therefore the largest historical center in Europe, of which a large part (approx. 900 ha) is protected as a World Heritage Site. Here are testimonies of different styles and epochs, starting from the founding of the Greek colony Parthenope in the 8th century BC, to the subsequent Roman rule and the epoch of Normans and Swabia, the Aragonese empire and the kings of France, right up to Guuseppe Garibaldi and the Regno d'Italia.
Very little is preserved from the original Greek settlement, but the protective walls in the north-west area of the center moved into this. The archaeological remains from Roman times, on the other hand, are sufficient, as the area of Neapolis (the "Neustadt") was created in addition to the Greek settlement, known as the names of Palaepolis (the "old town"). Graves, catacombs and other excavations are exhibited in the museums and the city's archaeological sites, such as in the area of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
The most important building from Norman-Swabian times is clearly Castel Dell'ovo, which was built on the former Roman residence of Lucio Licino Lucullo. The following time, the time of Anjou rule, was characterized by a strong expansion of the city, from which important evidence of incomparable beauty is preserved. Many of them are style in the Gothic Provenzalen, the main style of this era. Among them should definitely be visited the new cathedral with the well -known chapel dei Tesori di San Gennaro and the churches of San Lorenzo Maggiore, San Domenico Maggiore and Santa Chiara with the impressive cloister Delle Clarisse. Also worth seeing are the Castel Nuovo, also called "Il Maschio Angioino", the fortress and residence Castel Capuano and the Palazzo del Principe di Taranto.
The Aragonese period was characterized by fortress buildings, such as the Palazzo Real. The building, today seated by one of the largest libraries in Italy, the Vittorio Emanuele III library, was formerly inhabited by the Spanish and Austrian vice kings and then by the Bourbonen and the Savoy and is considered a geographical center and symbol of the power of Naples as well as its historical events.
In the 19th century, the city was largely reorganized, which made Naples a modern metropolis that we see today. A metropolis that, like no other, can combine history with the present and the historical and artistic treasures with the enchanting nature that surrounds it. A metropolis with a special soul that is time and limitless.
With a wide view of the Thyrical Sea, the Amalfi coast is one of the 55 Italian sites of the World Heritage List.
The coast is like a balcony that hovers between the cobalt blue sea and the slopes of the Monti Lattari, a sequence of valleys and land tongues, beaches and cultivation areas of citrus fruits, vines and olive groves. A unique landscape, which is recognized and protected by UNESCO as the Mediterranean landscape and which has an enormous cultural and naturalistic value, also thanks to its topographical features and the role in the history of European civilization.
The entire area encloses 11,231 hectares between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno and 16 charming communities of the province of Salerno: Amalfi, Atrani, Cava de 'Tirreni, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, MaiOri, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Raito, Rallo, Sant'egidio del Monte Albino, Scala, Tramonti, Vietri Sul Mare.
